Men's Cross Country Finishes Eighth at Notre Dame

Tough national competition gives EMU a challenge.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Eastern Michigan University men’s cross country team traveled to South Bend, Ind., to take on some stiff national competition at the prestigious 52nd Annual Notre Dame Invitational held at the nine-hole Notre Dame Golf Course. The Eagles finished in eighth place with 220 points. Host and 12th-ranked Notre Dame took home the team title with 92 points.
 
Junior Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) led the Eagles for the third consecutive time this season. The veteran turned in a blistering 24:20, his fastest collegiate 8K, good for an 18th place finish. Second man and fellow junior, Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich. - Hillsdale) ran the race in a time of 24:47, his second-fastest 8K and finished 42nd.
 
Kyle Mena (Portage, Mich.-Portage) was next for the Green and White. The junior finished the race in a time of 24:51 in 47th place. He beat his previous personal-best by nine seconds. Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) finished the race two spots behind Mena in 49th place in a time of 24:52. Luke Chrusciel (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) rounded out the top-five scoring Eagles, finishing 64th in a time of 25:03, setting a career-best.
 
Next for the Eagles was senior Wade Wines (Pinckney, Mich.-Ida), who is having a breakout season. He finished in 70th place in a time of 25:09, besting his career-best in the 8K by 38 seconds. Junior David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary’s Catholic) was next, finishing the race in 92nd place in a time of 25:29.
 
The last two in for the Eagle harriers were junior Neal Naughton (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) finishing in a time of 25:26 good for 122nd place and redshirt freshman Matt Hammersmith (Wolcottville, Mich.-Prairie Heights), who finished his first collegiate 8K in a time of 26:15 in 140th place.
 
The Eagles also had four runners in the men’s open race. Ryan Grau (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Kalamazoo Central) who was also running his first collegiate 8K race, finished 10th in the open race in a time of 26:04. Mark Wehrman (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) was next. The junior finished the course in a time of 26:24 in 15th place in the open race. Willy Dague (Newport, Mich. - Monroe Jefferson), another Eagle accomplishing his first collegiate 8K, finished 16th in a time of 26:26. The final Green and White Eagle jersey across the tape was redshirt freshman Ransom Brown (Coldwater, Mich.-Coldwater), who finished 19th in the open race, good for a time of 26:34.
 
The Eagles will return to action in two weeks when the travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to test themselves against the nation’s best at the Pre-NCAA Invitational, the same course in which the Eagles hope to finish their season at, NCAA Nationals.
